5 signs your business phone line needs replacing

Phone lines rarely fail outright. They degrade, and the cost shows up as enquiries you never knew about. Here are the five signs worth acting on.

5 signs your business phone line needs replacing

1. Callers say they can't hear you properly

Crackle, hum, dropped syllables and calls that cut off after a few minutes are classic signs of an ageing copper line or damp in an old cable. Engineers can patch it; they can't make copper new again.

The business cost isn't the annoyance. It's that a prospect ringing three suppliers will simply ring the next one on the list.

2. Calls are going unanswered and nobody knows how many

If you cannot answer the question "how many calls did we miss last week?", your phone line is a liability. An old line gives you no data at all — no missed-call log, no out-of-hours record, no way of knowing whether the same number tried four times.

A modern system tells you. That single number is usually what convinces people to move, because for most small businesses one recovered job a month covers the whole bill.

3. The bill keeps creeping and you can't see why

  • Line rental rising annually above inflation
  • Call charges to mobiles and 03 numbers that aren't in a bundle
  • Lines you're paying for that nothing is plugged into
  • Features billed separately that come as standard elsewhere

Pull twelve months of bills and total them. Most businesses we speak to are surprised by at least one of those four lines.

4. The number only works at one desk

If your main number rings a handset in an office and nowhere else, your availability is limited to whoever happens to be sat there. Any hybrid working, any site visits, any holiday cover becomes a manual divert somebody forgets to set.

Numbers no longer need to be tied to a location. Once they aren't, the whole problem disappears.

5. You've had a migration or switch-off letter

If your provider has written about migrating your line, that's a deadline with your name on it. Moving on your own timetable means you test properly, train people and choose a system that suits you. Waiting means it happens to you on a date someone else picked.

What replacing it involves

  • Keep your existing number — it ports across
  • No new cabling; the service runs over your existing broadband
  • Set up and tested on a temporary number before anything changes
  • Old line stays live until the new one has taken real calls
